Tomo — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 15 June 2026

Tomo is a local-first iOS app published by Indie Dish that acts as a companion for your Markdown notes vault (e.g. an Obsidian vault). This policy explains what Tomo does and does not do with your data.

The short version

Tomo does not collect, transmit, or store your personal data on any server we operate. There is no account, no login, and no analytics. Your notes stay on your device and in your own iCloud/file storage. Tomo has no backend.

What stays on your device

  • Your notes (the vault): Tomo reads and edits the Markdown files in the folder you choose. Those files never leave your device or your own storage by way of Tomo.
  • Search index: Note titles and content are indexed using Apple’s on-device CoreSpotlight so you can search them. This index lives on your device and is managed by iOS.
  • Your AI provider API key: If you enable AI chat, the API key you enter is stored only in the device Keychain. It is never sent to Indie Dish.
  • Settings: App preferences are stored locally on your device.

When you use AI chat (important)

AI chat is optional and requires you to supply your own API key for a third-party AI provider. When you send a message in AI chat, the content of that message — which may include text from your notes that is relevant to your question — is transmitted directly from your device to the AI provider you have configured, using your own API key, in order to generate a response.

  • Supported providers: Google Gemini (and optionally Anthropic Claude).
  • That data is handled by the chosen provider under their privacy policy and terms, not ours. Please review your provider’s policy:
  • Indie Dish does not receive, intercept, log, or store the content of these AI requests or responses.

If you never enter an API key or never use AI chat, no note content is sent anywhere.

Siri, Shortcuts, and system integration

Tomo’s Siri/App Intents and Shortcuts actions (search, capture, create notes) operate on your local vault on-device. Voice processing is handled by Apple’s Siri under Apple’s privacy terms.

Data collection summary (App Store “App Privacy”)

Tomo collects no data. This corresponds to the App Store privacy label “Data Not Collected.”

Children’s privacy

Tomo is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone.

Changes to this policy
